Anoushka Shankar will perform her brand-new album Chapter III: We Return to Light for the first time in the UK in Brighton Dome Concert Hall. With 30 years’ performing and eleven Grammy nominations, Shankar has spent her career redefining conventions in the sitar and in world music. This performance marks the culmination of her recent trilogy of mini-albums; following Chapter I: Forever, For Now and Chapter II: How Dark it is Before Dawn, it completes the cycle, looking towards a new dawn – a time of strength, wisdom and change. The event is supported by major supporter the Bagri Foundation.

The Grammy-award-winning Pakistani-American vocalist, Arooj Aftab also graces the Concert Hall stage. Renowned for her mesmerising live performances and defiance of genre boundaries, she has earned worldwide acclaim, including a Grammy for ‘Best Global Music Performance’. Her latest album Night Reign garnered a five-star review from the Guardian, and appeared on many Best of 2024 lists.

Mercury Prize-nominated singer-songwriter Nadine Shah brings her hypnotic vocals and raw, emotional power to Brighton Festival. Fresh from her acclaimed fifth album Filthy Underneath (2024) and tours with Depeche Mode and Young Fathers, she is one of the most compelling songwriters in the UK today, tackling themes of mental health, addiction and social justice.

Supported by Graves Son & Pilcher, ground-breaking electronic artist Max Cooper brings his most ambitious show yet to the Concert Hall: an immersive experience of luminous sculptures created with projections, lights and lasers accompanying his legendary ambient and beat-driven soundscapes. Over the course of the last two years, Cooper has been collecting anonymous quotes from members of the public in response to questions such as "What would you like to express which you cannot in everyday life?" The result is his latest album, On Being, which explores what it’s like to be a human, today.

Known for their joyful creativity, Malian duo and blind couple Amadou & Mariam combine infectious rhythms, hypnotic melodies and the latter's sweet vocals and have collaborated with stars such as Damon Albarn, Santigold and Scissor Sisters. Their latest release, La vie est belle, is a compilation that encompasses authentic street sounds and sophisticated electronica.

Aruna Sairam is an icon within the Indian classical tradition; for one night only she performs alongside New York-born, South India-raised rising star and leading light from the new generation, Ganavya. Described by the Wall Street Journal as “one of modern music's most compelling vocalists,” Ganavya melds traditional sounds with spiritual jazz to create an otherworldly, transcendent experience.

Senegalese star Seckou Keita, virtuoso of the 22-string kora, convenes an all-star line-up of fellow countryfolk to perform his latest release Homeland: Chapter 1, exploring identity and belonging, in native lands and as migrants. It will be a vibrant celebration of music and togetherness.

Ned Archibong of QM Records curates a special edition of MOVES Festival at The Old Market, an all-day celebration of diverse female talent with incredible acts including Harleighblu and Brighton rising star Kymara, plus more to be announced.

Local cultural hub The Rose Hill will host a series of Mehfils – small, intimate gatherings to experience South Asian classical music – throughout the day and night, featuring more than 20 artists who will play both traditional music and genre defying new creations.

Late-night parties include British-Pakistani, London-based DJ and producer Ahadadream’s opening party at The Old Market. His trademark percussive energy has filled dancefloors from Fabric to DC10 and beyond and he has produced music with such star DJs as Skrillex, Four Tet and Jamie XX.

And to end the Festival, Shiva Soundsystem's founder Nerm welcomes his friends and top secret star guests to the decks for a super special closing party for Brighton Festival 2025.

About Anoushka Shankar

Anoushka Shankar’s list of accomplishments make impressive reading. She’s a masterful sitarist; film composer; impassioned activist; the youngest and first female recipient of a British House of Commons Shield; the first Indian musician to perform live or to serve as presenter at the Grammy Awards with eleven nominations under her belt, and the first Indian woman to be nominated; one of the first five female composers to have been added onto the UK A-level music syllabus. Immersed from a young age on the world stage, with over a quarter-century’s performing behind her, she is a singular, genre-defying artist across realms - classical and contemporary, acoustic and electronic.

Anoushka began studying the sitar - and Indian classical music - from the age of nine under the tutelage of her father, Ravi Shankar. After making her professional debut at thirteen, she began touring worldwide alongside her father before embarking on a successful solo career when she was 18.

Having released three classical albums by the age of 25, the switch to electronic music, on 2005’s Rise was fuelled by a desire “to speak the language of my own history: growing up across three continents with one foot in the past and one in the present.”

She has collaborated with diverse artists including Herbie Hancock, Patti Smith, Joshua Bell, Sting, Gold Panda, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Jules Buckley and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Her touring career has taken her from legendary jazz cafes to festival stages in front of 40,000 people.

Anoushka is also an activist. She has been outspoken about her experiences as a woman and a survivor of child abuse, throwing her weight behind campaigns such as One Billion Rising. She works with organisations such as the UNHCR and Help Refugees to raise funds and awareness for the refugee crisis.

The show will mark the first Bollywood superstar concert at the iconic venue in 20 years, welcoming back silver screen idol, Salman Khan, and the first since the venue’s major refurbishment. theme of ‘New Dawn’, working with Brighton Festival to shape a programme that imagines a
hopeful future after a difficult time, celebrating our collective ability to recover, take action
and come together to change the world for the better.
Brighton Festival, a major event in the international arts calendar, has a long tradition of
attracting some of the most exciting performers from across the globe, this year as far afield
as India, the US, Australia, Peru and Italy, as well as promoting local artists, and
presenting fresh, challenging new work. This year’s Festival takes place 3-26 May, with 120
events across music, theatre, dance, circus, visual arts, film, literature, debate, outdoor
and community throughout the city and beyond.
How dark it is before dawn is a major new participatory event for Brighton Festival 2025 in
which artists Doyel Joshi and Neil Ghose Balser of Howareyoufeeling.studio invite
anyone and everyone to draw their ‘New Dawn’. The hundreds or thousands of drawings
will be showcased in a final, major exhibition at The Old Courtroom showcasing the city’s
collective ideas for a new dawn and way forward. Drawing materials will be available in
locations across Brighton and everyone can get involved.

Anoushka Shankar says:

Shankar has invited artists who have inspired her over the years, including mesmerising
Pakistani-American vocalist Arooj Aftab and Mercury Prize-nominated singer songwriter
Nadine Shah. World premiere and Brighton Festival commission Wembley is a new
performance piece written by acclaimed author and screenwriter Nikesh Shukla (The Good

Immigrant) and actors Nikesh Patel (Starstruck) and Himesh Patel (Yesterday) in the
aftermath of the UK’s 2024 race riots, wrestling with their place in this country and calling for
change.
Anoushka Shankar herself performs her new album, Chapter III: We Return to Light. With
30 years’ performing and eleven Grammy nominations, Shankar has spent her career
redefining conventions in the sitar and in world music. This performance marks the
culmination of her recent trilogy of mini-albums; following Chapter I: Forever, For Now and
Chapter II: How Dark it is Before Dawn, it completes the cycle, looking towards a new dawn
– a time of strength, wisdom and change. The event is supported by major supporters,
the Bagri Foundation.
Shankar will co-host and perform in a specially curated version of Brown Girl In The Ring,
supported by Dishoom Permit Room. The platform, founded by Sweety Kapoor, celebrates
female talent across music, film and culture – featuring an exceptional cohort of
award-winning poets, actors, dancers, musicians and activists including Mona Arshi, Nikita
Gill, Asha Puthli, Meera Syal (CBE) and Indira Varma.
In Room-i-Nation, supported by the Bagri Foundation, young virtuoso of South Indian
Karnatik music Aditya Prakash combines live music, sound, video projection and personal
stories to reflect on his experience growing up as an Indian man in America, offering a
hopeful look at bridging cultures and musical traditions.
In dance, award-winning choreographer Aakash Odedra’s spiritual and captivating solo
piece Songs of the Bulbul is inspired by the Persian myth of the caged bulbul bird’s final
song, combining Indian classical dance with Sufi kathak and Islamic poetry to create a work
of ‘exquisite beauty and sadness’ (The Scotsman). And renowned Bharatanatyam dancer
Mythili Prakash presents Jwala, a spellbinding solo performance exploring fire as a symbol
of destruction and rebirth, part of the international programme supported by Brighton
Festival principal supporter The Pebble Trust.
Brighton Festival co-commission Theatre of Dreams is the thrilling new work from the world
renowned Hofesh Shechter Company, that dives into a world of fantasy and the
subconscious, revealing hidden fears, hopes, desires and emotions, accompanied by live
musicians performing a cinematic score. AYNA is a world premiere from British-Turkish
choreographer Ceyda Tanc, set in a nightclub with a live DJ and featuring an all-female cast,
weaving Turkish folk traditions and athletic contemporary dance to explore our universal
desire for love and belonging. In circus, with support from The Pebble Trust, Australia’s Circa
return to Brighton Festival with their visionary Humans 2.0, combining acrobatics,
contemporary dance and a pulsing electronic score to deliver a groundbreaking show
that pushes physical limits to their extremes and questions what it means to be human.

The international theatre programme, supported by The Pebble Trust, includes Peruvian
theatre company Teatro La Plaza’s defiant reinvention of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, performed
by a remarkable community of actors all with Down syndrome. From Italy, The Gummy
Bears Great War is a short, unique, charming exploration of the absurdity of war, played out
on a table with real candy gummy bears.
The legendary theatre director Emma Rice and her company Wise Children take on Alfred
Hitchcock in a riotously funny reworking of North by Northwest that turns the original
thriller on its head.
Leading American feminist writer Rebecca Solnit joins former Green MP Caroline Lucas to
talk about her new collection of essays No Straight Road Takes You There, making her
case for the power of collective action. In a Brighton Festival Exclusive, writers Shon Faye
and Torrey Peters come together to discuss queer and trans love and desire alongside their
new books Love in Exile and Stag Dance. Internationally renowned author Robert
Macfarlane presents his most personal and political book yet: Is a River Alive? explores the
idea that rivers are living beings, taking readers on an exhilarating journey from Ecuador to
Southern India, to Quebec.
The Brighton Festival Film Unit screens its new documentary film about music education
hub Create Music's Orchestra 360, a music group for children and young people with
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities supported by major sponsor Mayo Wynne
Baxter, alongside its two other films, plus a special live performance from the Orchestra.
In classical, Anoushka Shankar performs her father Ravi Shankar and American composer
Philip Glass’s pioneering album Passages, for the first time since the BBC Proms in 2017,
alongside an ensemble of Indian classical musicians and the Britten Sinfonia. And the
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Brighton Festival Chorus play the UK premiere of
Academy Award-winning film composer Rachel Portman’s new concerto, Tipping Point,
as part of a nature-themed programme that also includes Sibelius’s orchestral hymn to the
Finnish forests and American eco-activist composer John Luther Adams’s choral prayers to
Mother Earth.
A special performance supported by the Bagri Foundation brings together two incredible
talents for the first time: Aruna Sairam, a giant of Indian classical music and Ganavya, a
rising star who melds South Asian sounds with spiritual jazz.
In contemporary music, supported by Graves Son & Pilcher, ground-breaking electronic
artist Max Cooper brings his most ambitious show yet to the Concert Hall: an immersive
experience of luminous sculptures created with projections, lights and lasers accompanying
his legendary ambient and beat-driven soundscapes. And Shiva Soundsystem's founder
Nerm welcomes his friends and top secret star guests to the decks for a super special
closing party for Brighton Festival 2025.

In the world premiere Beside the Sea, photographers Martin Parr and JJ Waller have come
together to create a ground-breaking exhibition of supersized photographs that can only be
seen from the top deck of a bus fixed to the flat roofs of many of the city’s bus shelters.
For children and young people, Future City: Brighton 2125 calls all young makers,
inventors and creators to come to Brighton Dome Corn Exchange to build a Brighton & Hove
of the future using recycled materials. Supported by Brighton College Prep School, Pocket
Shakespeare is a celebration of the ‘best bits’ of Shakespeare with former Children’s
Laureates Michael Rosen and Chris Riddell, with live illustration and a lot of laughs.
Without Walls returns with plenty of free, family-friendly events in outdoor locations across
Brighton and Crawley including Hydropunk, a fun and interactive installation in which
participants must work together to conserve and recycle 1,000 litres of water; Eshu at the
Crossroads, which brings the vibrancy of Yoruba culture to life with dance, puppetry and
music, and Go Grandad, Go!, a hip-hop dance and theatre show exploring intergenerational
family relationships.
The Children’s Parade, supported by Brighton Girls, is back for opening weekend, and, after
its roaring success last year, Brighton Table Tennis Club returns with a Table Tennis Day
for the whole family, with 20 tables, music and food, and Paralympic medal winners Will
Bayley and Bly Twomey.

About Anoushka Shankar
Anoushka Shankar’s list of accomplishments make impressive reading. She’s a masterful sitarist; film
composer; impassioned activist; the youngest and first female recipient of a British House of
Commons Shield; the first Indian musician to perform live or to serve as presenter at the Grammy
Awards with eleven nominations under her belt, and the first Indian woman to be nominated; one of
the first five female composers to have been added onto the UK A-level music syllabus. Immersed
from a young age on the world stage, with over a quarter-century’s performing behind her, she is a
singular, genre-defying artist across realms - classical and contemporary, acoustic and electronic.
Anoushka began studying the sitar - and Indian classical music - from the age of nine under the
tutelage of her father, Ravi Shankar. After making her professional debut at thirteen, she began
touring worldwide alongside her father before embarking on a successful solo career when she was
18.
Having released three classical albums by the age of 25, the switch to electronic music, on 2005’s
Rise was fuelled by a desire “to speak the language of my own history: growing up across three
continents with one foot in the past and one in the present.”
She has collaborated with diverse artists including Herbie Hancock, Patti Smith, Joshua Bell, Sting,
Gold Panda, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Jules Buckley and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Her touring career
has taken her from legendary jazz cafes to festival stages in front of 40,000 people.
Anoushka is also an activist. She has been outspoken about her experiences as a woman and a
survivor of child abuse, throwing her weight behind campaigns such as One Billion Rising. She works
with organisations such as the UNHCR and Help Refugees to raise funds and awareness for the
refugee crisis.

Bend it Like Beckham (Phoenix Theatre) vocalists, Rekha and Chirag Rao, as Rani and
Arjun will make their West End debuts as actors, with Omar Khan (Life of Pi, Wyndham's
Theatre) as Pavan returning to the West End. Sowmya JayKrish as Mala, Robby Khela as

girl, shunned by society, arrives in the city of dreams to meet the famed director, Pavan
Picturewalla. Desperate to protect a secret from his cherished daughter, Mala, who loves
aspiring actor, Arjun, Pavan faces new challenges. Meanwhile, superstar Bunty schemes to

Shortlisted restaurants and takeaways have been unveiled for the annual Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards (ARTA), the most prestigious celebration of Pan Asian cuisine in the UK, which this year will be taking place on Sunday 6^th October at London’s Royal Lancaster.

Hosted by Samantha Simmonds, BBC Journalist and Broadcaster, and Paul Martin, Magician and member of the world-famous Magic Circle, the coveted awards are in recognition of the UK’s best Asian cuisine across a series of

prestigious regional and national categories. ARTA rewards excellence, craft, creativity and great taste by bringing the UK’s most prestigious Asian restaurants and chefs together under one roof.

Nominees were chosen based on nominations by customers from across the UK, including over 900,000 customers of ARTA’s strategic partner ChefOnline, Social Media and Food Hygiene Ratings, followed by a final judgement of an esteemed judging panel to crown each region’s Asian excellence. The process concludes at the Grand Finale and Gala Evening, where the ultimate winners will be announced and honoured with prestigious awards in various categories.

From the National Champion of the Champions, Regional Restaurant of the Year and National and Regional Chefs of the Year to National and Regional Takeaway of the Year and National Newcomer of The Year, ARTA will spotlight over 1,250 restaurants and takeaways across the UK that were nominated by restaurant-goers and diners from all over the country.

Suddenly Frankie is immersed in the world of fame and fortune but as she climbs the
sparkling staircase of stardom, each step makes her question about what she is willing to
do, or be subjected to, for success.
Drawing inspiration from both traditional Bollywood music and the best of Western musical
theatre, the music for Frankie Goes To Bollywood is a carefully integrated hybrid - designed
to appeal to lovers of the Bollywood genre and also lovers of a good old West End
extravaganza.
Bollywood as an industry generates over £2 billion a year, and globally the films have an
audience of 1.3billion. In the UK a successful Bollywood film can be expected to take as
much as £4 million - so it’s little wonder that the glamorous lure of Bollywood stardom
appeals to many British-South Asian young people. Frankie Goes To Bollywood is inspired
by the true stories of Brits in Bollywood
Alongside a couple of very well-known British-born faces in Bollywood including Katrina Kaif
and Alia Bhatt, there are also dozens more male and female actors born in Britain who have
established successful careers. Frankie Goes To Bollywood was inspired by many of their
stories, by Pravesh’s own experience of being a Brit in Bollywood, and by what he observed
regarding British-born women’s experience in the industry.
Pravesh Kumar, MBE (Writer/Director) says “Frankie is a multi-layered piece of
theatre. It offers a sumptuous British spin on the glorious stories of Bollywood; a
breathtakingly colourful journey of romance, sweeping songs and vibrant dance
juxtaposed with an exploration of the darker undercurrent within the culture. This is a
celebration of everything glorious and spectacular about Bollywood and Indian
culture while highlighting less positive experiences women face. I wanted to highlight
this issue because it’s men’s responsibility to shine a light on sexism and to call it out
whenever and wherever they see it. I hope this show is a catalyst.
Rifco Theatre has a long tradition of working to celebrate and reflect contemporary British
Asian experiences, culture, and society. Pravesh’s own experience working for a decade in
Bollywood, and his extensive work looking at the British South Asian experience in UK
theatre and film, play a fundamental role in the development of Rifco’s productions and
subject matter focusing on untold stories and under-represented voices.

To Raise Awareness Around Public Sexual Harassment

#UntieYourFears Campaign Says No To Street Harassment

Continuing to advocate women empowerment and to challenge sexist and misogynistic behaviour

patterns that have become normalised in society, heritage, South Asian hair care brand, Vatika

UK, has launched a new campaign that aims to highlight and initiate conversations around public

street harassment, entitled #UntieYourFears.

Public Street harassment (PSH) is a form of harassment that is directed at someone in a public

space without their consent. 75 per cent of girls in the UK, some as young as 12, have

experienced some form of public harassment in their lifetime. 97 per cent of 18-24 year olds have

been sexually harassed in public, while 80 per cent of women of all ages in the UK have

experienced public sexual harassment.

Public street harassment is not limited to actions or comments that have sexual connotations. It

often includes homophobic and transphobic slurs and hateful comments regarding disability.

Recipients include people of all genders but women are more commonly victims of harassment

by men. Furthermore, South Asians frequently experience various forms of abuse, including

insults based on their race, religion or ethnicity. However, reporting rates in South Asian

communities are statistically lower due to a number of cultural norms that exist, inhibiting people

from coming forward. There is also a clear lack of awareness and understanding of what

constitutes harassment and sexual abuse and when it manifests in casual forms we often let it

pass as a societal norm.

Common forms of street harassment include unwanted sexualised comments; provocative

gestures; staring; stalking; beeping the horn; wolf-whistling; indecent exposure; persistent sexual

advances ;and touching or grabbing by strangers. The impact and consequences of public sexual

harassment can often be long term for the victims, feeling fear, anxiety, panic and depression

after long periods of being exposed to harassment. This often forces victims to change habits by

avoiding night time socialising; changing their clothes to look more masculine; wearing their hair

up; and even changing jobs or moving home. The British government has now backed a law that

will criminalise sexual harassment in the streets, introducing a bill that will make it a specific

offence.

#UntieYourFears marks the next chapter to follow Vatika UK’s award-winning and visionary

#BeVisible and #StrongerRoots campaigns, which signified game-changing moments in the

South Asian personal care industry that aim to empower women. The #UntieYourFears campaign

features four videos specifically highlighting common forms of public sexual harassment:

catcalling, usually sexual in tone and manner, that is a form of objectification and intimidation;

unwanted touching of a person’s hair, body or clothing; intrusive staring or persistent leering that

is sexual in nature; and unwanted pressing against another person in a sexual manner and

unwanted physical contact. The videos depict four South Asian women in everyday scenarios in

The campaign’s central message is to empower women; raise awareness to identify different

scenarios of street harassment; encourage women to share their experiences; start

conversations; and advocate the public call out this behaviour when witnessed on the streets. It

has been conceptualised and created by award-winning, brand marketing agency, Ethnic Reach.
