Sangam Mela – A Celebration of Culture, Heritage & Community
Join us for Sangam Mela, a vibrant celebration bringing South Asian heritage, equestrian tradition, food, crafts and community together in Kirklees. Taking place at Funfair Park, Heckmondwike, this free family event offers a chance to experience a spectacular day of traditional entertainment and cultural activities.
A major highlight of the event will be tent pegging, a thrilling equestrian discipline with deep roots in South Asian and cavalry traditions. Riders charge at speed on horseback, using a lance or sword to strike, pierce and pick up a small target peg from the ground. The sport demands speed, precision, timing, horsemanship and a strong partnership between rider and horse.
The tent-pegging display will bring this spectacular tradition to life, offering audiences an opportunity to see the skill and concentration required by riders at close quarters.
Alongside the tent pegging, Sangam Mela will feature craft and local business stalls, South Asian food stalls, cultural performances and family-friendly activities, creating a welcoming day for people of all ages.
The event forms part of Seasons of Culture Kirklees. The wider Seasons of Culture initiative is a West Yorkshire Combined Authority programme building on the region's Years of Culture from 2023–2025. In 2026, Kirklees is participating in the Seasons of Culture – Nature programme, supporting community-focused cultural activity and opportunities for people to connect with culture, creativity and the local environment.
