Kōlam patterns are a daily ritual among Tamil Hindu women living in Tamil Nadu in south-eastern India. The women take a pinch of flour between finger and thumb, and let it fall in a continuous line to create the desired patterns on the floor and at the door of houses, businesses and temples.

Guided by experienced artist Preethi Ravichandran, you will use naturally pre-dyed strips of cloth to recreate a Kōlam pattern on a naturally dyed tote bag, which you will be able to take away with you at the end of the workshop.

Kōlam patterns are known to promote wellbeing and you don’t need any previous experience of sewing or embroidery to take part in this workshop.

Preethi Ravichandran is based at the University of Huddersfield and has been creating Kōlam patterns for many years, honing her skills to produce stunning designs.
