Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield-by-election. The Manchester mayor who has been dubbed the King of the North won with 54.8% of the vote. The Reform party managed to claim second place with their candidate Robert Kenyon who gained 34.5% of the vote.
Since the announcement of Burnhams candidacy it has set up questions of a potential leadership contest. With confirmation of his win, many await to see if Prime Minister Keir Starmer will resign or if their will be an announcement of a leadership contest.
In a rally following his win, Burnham said: “I would say it was more an instruction that things had to change.”
He later added: “we have an opportunity to turn the tide to make the country feel like it's working again.”
Across the labour party 99 MPs have called for Keir Starmer to resign. Despite these calls Keir Starmer is prepared to stay and has stated he is ready for a leadership contest.
The Makerfield-by-election was not the only election to occur this week. In Scotland two elections occurred, one in Aberdeen South and in Arbroath and Broughty Ferry. In Aberdeen South we saw the Conservatives take control from the SNP. Whilst in Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, the SNP maintained control.
