Pontefract Hospital’s Orthopaedic surgical hub has received national accreditation from NHS England’s GIRFT (Getting It Right First Time) programme. This programme aims help improve patient care and increase levels of efficiency across hospital departments.
Pontefract Hospital join 82 other hubs accredited since the scheme began in 2023. GIRFT hopes to accredit all hubs in operation in the NHS across England.
The Accreditation scheme is delivered in partnership with the Royal College of surgeons of England of and the Royal College of anaesthetists and is considered an assessment of quality within the NHS.
A team as part of GIRFT visited the hospital on 16 March evaluated the hubs patient pathways, their staffing, and training. Following the visit, the decision was made on 20 March to award the hospital the accreditation.

James Newman, Clinical Service Unit Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics said: “his accreditation reinforces Mid Yorkshire’s position as a leader in elective orthopaedic care and our role in supporting improvements across the wider NHS.”
Professor Tim Briggs, GIRFT programme, said: “We want to provide the assurance for patients and staff that these sites are delivering safe and high-quality care now and will continue to accelerate their progress and productivity in the future.”
