Keir Starmer announced his plans to ban social media for under 16’s.
The ban will target platforms like: Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X. The ban will exclude apps like WhatsApp which main use is for messaging.
The UK are set to follow in the footsteps of countries like Australia who have implemented bans as well as Greece who are set to implement a ban next January for under 15’s.
In a press release, the government state that “children will be given back their childhoods”, with children having less screentime and more opportunities to play.
The widescale app ban will be targeted at those under 16, but the government have also made it clear that they plan to place restrictions on those who are 16-18. These restrictions may include screen time restrictions and compulsory breaks online.
These changes have come about due to growing parental concern in regard to the harms of social media. Government consultations have shown that 9 in 10 parents welcome the ban.
There is not an exact date given for the ban but it is expected to come into place by spring 2027.
