Kirklees Council have been getting ready for the next stage of the demolition of well-known high-rise flats in Berry Brow, Bishop's Court and Holme Park Court. Contractors are now starting phase one: setting up the site. Residents will first notice a large, hoarded perimeter being installed around the area. These hoardings will surround the building but still allow safe access along Parkgate and to the bus stop.
t will be a five-stage project, taking each layer down piece by piece that includes site set up, asbestos surveys and removal, soft strip, demolition and site clearance.
The decision to demolish these buildings was made through various consultations with the previous tenants and surrounding residents. At the time, there was overwhelming support to start fresh with the site rather than refurbish the blocks. Since then, the council had dedicated teams working with the tenants to find them new homes.
To keep the wider community informed on the demolition process, the council held a well-attended Community Briefing in early February. The focus of the event was to offer assurance and give residents the opportunity to ask questions which resulted in a successful turnout of just under 100 local people. The briefing offered clarity on the plans, timelines, safety measures, and what the community can expect over the coming months.
Following the demolition, the future of the site will be decided in the council’s Capital Investment programme’s new build scheme that was submitted to cabinet in December 2025 and will form a part of the council’s vision to create more homes.
Councillor Moses Crook, Cabinet member for Housing and Transport, Kirklees Council said:
“It’s great to see we are moving forward with plans to demolish these two outdated blocks. This progress is essential for the future of the site and will make way for new housing to help battle the national housing shortage. “
“We understand that demolition projects of this size can be a worrying time for those who live locally, but we want to reassure residents that we will do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum - and keep you informed along the way.”
Kirklees Council will continue to share progress of the demolition project as it develops on their communication channels and with the neighbouring residents.
