Campaign group Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE) have lost their appeal of Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander’s decision to approve the 2.2 billion schemes for the emergency runway at Gatwick to operate at all times.
As reported by ITV news, the scheme was originally approved in September 2025. It was created to allow for over 100,000 more flights to be flown per year. The campaigners had brought forward their case due to beliefs that the government had not considered the environmental impact of another runway operating.
Justice Mould presided over the case and found that the Transports Secretary decision was not “contradictory” in regard to the governments promise to reach net zero.
The Judge had also rejected other arguments put forward by the group.
CAGNE did release a statement after the ruling, stating that they are not taking the ruling as the “final word”.
