With Keir Starmer announcing his resignation as Prime Minister, the public are left wondering who will next be in the hotseat.
Andy Burnham has already thrown his hat into the ring. Which Labour MPs are expected to join him in Labour’s leadership contest.
Alistair Carns
The Birmingham Selly Oak MP, commonly known as Al Carns, has not ruled out a bid for the top spot. The former Marine has been dubbed as a potential surprise entry in the race. Although he has gained popularity and respect amongst fellow MPs, some may have reservations due to his short political career having only become an MP in June 2024. As a politician he has acted as both Minister for Veterans and People and Minister for the Armed Forces. His policies in regard to issues external to the military are relatively unknown. He is yet to confirm whether he will run.
Angela Rayner
Previously the deputy Prime Minister and often seen as Keir Starmer’s right hand woman. She was thrown into scandal when rumours emerged of her not having paid the correct tax stamp on her £800,000 home. She later confirmed the rumours admitting it was a mistake on her part and confirmed she had settled the probe. Despite this, she has remained a popular figure in the Labour party due to her previous appearances in PMQs and her working-class background. It is unclear if she will enter, the race.
Ed Miliband
The ex-Labour leader seems to be a fan-favourite for leader. The MP for Doncaster North has not made any plans to be the next leader, but many believe he may make a return. Under Keir Starmer he has been the Secretary of State for the department of Energy and Net Zero.
